Actually it went up to 800k inactive accounts by now. Of course you won't see Blizz announcing such for obvious reasons :3 There are several reports about this on various forums, some even on Blizzard's forums. Do a little google search and you'll definitely find the one or the other thread with extensive explanations to the whole case.

Rift plus a lacklustre Cata launch is no doubt the cause of the current dip in subs ^^
I'm sure that there's been similar reductions when WAR and AoC were released, but noone mentioned it back then.

I doubt that the 3d art department also balances the game and develops PvE/P content

No, they went up to 12 million, now they've gone BACK to 11.4 million. They had a boom with cata and some new mmos took a small piece of their pie. And Mike Morhaime did comment on this. WoW ain't really going anywhere.

I think some people are underestimating the magnitude of the game. Last time I checked, Wow dominated over 50% of the entire MMO market. Can't put the exact number down though.. bad memory. Even if it would slump to half that number, it's still the largest MMO ;-)

Finally, Tauren have steering horns! \o/ Now I just need to learn the Tauren Piggyback riding skill.

It might be, yes. But several servers in China have gone down and there's no estimate time on their return, just as an example. Besides, even without any official numbers or reports, just look around you. So many people quitting, on all kinds of servers, all over the world, and many of those who stay are only playing because, like you said, there's nothing better out on the market. Yet. The question is what happens if/when something better is released.

Looking around isn't a great way to judge. Just cos a large amount in one area quit isn't very accurate to represent the whole subscriber number, especially since we aren't on every server, all over the world. The amount lost is still a fraction, and as Mike Morhaime said, it isn't the first time Blizzard has lost a small number of subscribers to other games, but most come back to Old Faithful in a few months anyway. This is nothing special, there have been doomsayers about WoW's demise approaching even in Vanilla.

Like I said, we'll wait and see. I'm anything but a doomsayer, I'm just saying what I've observed and experienced

Maybe we're losing a lot of people, but maybe we're losing a few people. Either way, the net amount of people leaving is still very low imo cause loads of new people are always changing
