Addictive substances.
Yes, drugs people, drugs. I was wondering are there any addictive substances in WoW apart from the arcane (and its variations) and Bloodthistle. Thus far I've been able to find none and it'd be interesting to know if Blizzard has any more addictive substances, preferably plants or whatever, in game.

Yes, ICly there is a large active drugs-Cartel (The Forlorn Cartel, and I hear Ravenholdt Syndicate deals in it too.) in WoW, on Alliance RP side. They trade mushrooms, arcane herbs, weed-like plants and whatnot. The chance that there are alot of drugslike substances in WoW is very very big and probably there are alot of drugs, but Blizzard cannot exactly implend drugs all over the place and maintain a 12+ rating.
The only other drugs I know that's lorewise is "Snuff" (Coke) the pirates in Stranglethorn have.

Snuff.. is actually tobbaco you inhale through the nose instead of smoking in a pipe
Apart from the Cartels branded contraband there has been a long established variation of Cocaine/Speed.. Simply called "Dust". It's just knowing who to get it from
There's alot of room for imagination in that regard. Lorewise, addictive substances have been placed in the magical form. The main being Arcane Magic and tangiably.. Demonblood.

True. We also worked on some Addicted debuffs for those interested in RPing a proper junkie and stuff like that. If interested in those drugs talk to Feydor, the ones who makes them for us.

Ah, I see. Snuff's a form of tobacco, Flushbloom sounds interesting, very, very interesting even.
And I'll have a chat with Feydor, I may use drugs (oh that sounds so bad) for RP in the far-away future so all the information I can get is helpful, even though I'll probably go with Blizzard alternatives if there are some.

Re: Addictive substances.
Snuff is powdered tobacco. And it's... well, it makes you sneeze.
There are hookah/water pipes scattered around. So obviously something is smoked in them.
A number of trolls appear or act as though they are addicted or imbibers of various herbs/mushrooms with psychoactive properties. I RP Gruff as using a number of things he finds, or grows (indeed, I once wrote a story where it appeared he had eaten a Sporelok... just to see what happened...). Or medicines or such he makes...
Whenever a poison is used, think how it acts. Mindnumbing poison in small doses is a drug someone may feasibly take for instance. Any medicinal plant or potion may have similar effects. Alchemists get the mad alchemist potions for instance. Noggenfogger could even be seen as a drug (mushrooms being a major ingredient, and some of the effects "trippy").
More or less as long as people have existed they have found ways to get intoxicated... and usually from everything from the "banal" and everyday (a mushroom, a berry) to the more complex (manufactured drugs, or in WoW magicks/arcane/fel/demonblood, or even technological stimulae used to bring about euphoria (like jacking in to a power system, to jack off... so to speak).

Re: Addictive substances.
There is also a pick-pocketable tobacco pouch available in game, so that would, in combination with the various forms of Snuff available in game, be evidence that tobacco does in fact exist IC.
Then of course there's alcohol. That's an addictive substance too, you know.
As Jayse says, there's also the various "dusts" that are abound. One quest in booty bay implies that Dream Dust is a hallucinogenic, and those are almost always addictive.
In addition, every single anaestethic is addictive. In my meaning I'd say that this means that every single healing potion available, and the herbs made to use them can be counted as addictive. I'm almost inclined to say that being healed could be addictive (hey... there's an idea. A man or woman that intentionally gets him/herself hurt in order to recieve healing from the priests).
As others have said as well... All items of major arcane nature, or even a slight fel nature should be addictive. Health stones, soul stones, mana gems, most outland herbs and I'd even say that it wouldn't be unfeasible to be addicted to handle unprocessed outland ores (or to the processing of them itself). It wouldn't be far-fetched if Saronite was also addictive.
Needless to say, anything that could give a relief to fel/arcane-addiction will almost certainly be addictive in itself too.
Not to mention that there are poisons of monsters/animals ingame that causes odd effects. Those could also be addictive.

*takes from Gruff*
Indeed, to imagine addictive you first need to consider the types of addiction.
You have the chemical addictions. Tobbaco, Morphine, Speed, Cocaine, Heroin compounds are all chemically addictive in various quantities and stages of application. Meaning your body will gradually cease to function propperly over time and affect your mental health as a result. If taken in large doeses they -will- kill you, some almost instantly (See "Whippets")
Socially addictive being the effects said substance has on you. Euphoria, Hallucination, complete relaxation, adrenaline, orgasm.. everything your body naturally produces in various situations for good reason. Sex feels good which facilitates procreation. You take LSD to trip out and escape, you smoke weed to relax and get social, you drink alcohol for the same reason.
Simply thinking about something and how it affects you can lead to some interesting results.
Also remember.. 'Drugs' themselves are not outlawed into contraband overnight. It is a process of seeing thier health effects of misuse on the body and the impact on society. Someone could be for example smoking a 'bifta' at the cathedral square but it wouldn't mean the guards would simply come and arrest them, strip search them with an on the spot fine.
*giggles then holds it up for anyone to take, clearly not being arsed to get up*

Re: Addictive substances.
GODDAMMIT...
I had written a lovely long additional thing. Then I lost it... It was all clever and good.
But here is the jist...
Drugs, or something like that (it's a bad term maybe "drugs"?) have been used in religion, science, art and warfare throughout history in our world. So surely the same in WoW?
I see no reason why most drugs wouldn't be accepted to some degree by most societies in WoW. I guess there would be harder drugs, or an illegal trade in somethings that certain areas wouldn't like.
I mean, would the Tauren like a trade in for instance, animals that had a narcotic quality when drained of their bile or something (I'm thinking of the "medicinal" uses of "bear gall"...). Would Stormwind Council sit idly by if cheap gin houses sprung up in the city, and turned many a good woman to a jibbering wreck and tuppenny whore? The gentry of an area might see nothing wrong with using a certain drug for fun on an evening, but would they let their serfs and servants do the same, if it stopped their productivity?
Playing a character with some addiction, is a great idea. Shows the pitfalls, and "humanity" of a character. It can be a positive and negative thing. Would we stop a mighty warrior from eating that mushroom if it turned him into a beserking killing machine (so long as he was on our side)? Would we stop our priest from licking that toad because it brings him closer to our gods? On the flipside, what would licking that toad, or eating that mushroom do to you over repeated uses? Would you lose something, or gain more?
Drugs are everywhere in our world. And no doubt in WoW. WoW is a world where magick touches almost anything. Imagine how much more powerful a trip would be if the "acid" came from a magickal beastie? Or how much more powerful the slumber if your Soma was concocted from flowers from Outland?
Anything that makes a world more alive like this is a good thing.

The product Dust was founded by the 60T named Dusty or Fozk'jin, an old Troll and master of drugs and all things inhaled. The Sixty Thieves send out and supply people with kilos of this stuff every day for either Horde, Alliance or even the Neutral customers.
Ehm I mean umm...
Despite what many have heard, there is no such thing as a Troll named Dusty or "Dust" itself so just mooooove along!
Another drug people often use is the herb Silverweed.
Another drug the Sixty Thieves distribute is spiked mana crystals to give you that pleasant taste of strawberries during your high.

I would up the prices for Azhara Azure, and since it's a rare herb in Azhara, I would definitly not make it a common drug either.
But that is my opinion, I think you are doing great work on those pages!

Awesome! We should host a plantation-raid event once xD
It could lead to RP for you, the people who are addicted to a certain herb will suddenly need to pay alot more, as you have less available due to a raid, prices upping temporarily ^^ just an idea!
