Mablin Gorthaur Gorthaur_Acherus_DK

Character name: Mablin Gorthaur
Alias: The Necromancer of Dol-Sauroth
Gender: Female
Age: Unknown (Estimates range from 300 to 600)
Race: Quel'dorei (Undead)
Class: Death Knight

Birth region: Quel'thalas
Specific area/town: Silvermoon City
Family: Melchior Aulende (Father, deceased), Ullian Aulende (Mother, deceased)
Known friends or enemies: N/A

Description:

Though once incredibly beautiful, undeath has not been kind to Mablin's appearance, with her full lips and soft face now shriveled and hard, delicate hands made for playing the harp and weaving spells now gnarled and ending in long, sharp talon-like nails, and what was once undoubtedly an ample figure with curves to put most Elven women to shame has been reduced to a ghastly and bony husk.

What beauty and warmth she had in life has rotted away to leave only misery and darkness in its wake, her eyes piercing and hateful underneath the glow of black magic and her pallid flesh layered thinly with frost, blood and the stench of death. Being too close to her will make the air feel cold and tainted, and there are vicious whispers in the air around her that reach the mind without passing the ears.

Personality:

Mablin's demeanour is somewhat typical for a Death Knight, usually maintaining a cold, emotionless and calm demeanour, that can easily boil over into a bloodthirsty rage of violence as the darker impulses implanted in the Death Knight stirs. While she derives no joy from cruelty she is comfortable with it, utilizing violence and coercion to get what she wants regardless of the consequences to the victim.

She holds no sympathy for any of the races of the Horde except her own kind, and regards suffering befalling Orcs, Trolls and Forsaken to be justice in its own right. The Tauren and Huojin Pandaren are spared her hatred, though she considers them irrelevant in the grand scheme of things, to be helped or destroyed as needed.

She regards the Alliance only remotely better, preferring to fight threats to Quel'thalas itself than supporting the Horde against her old allies. She regards Elves as sacred and avoids killing Night Elves and High Elves to the best of her ability, but has little regard for Humans, Dwarves, Gnomes, Draenei, Worgen or Tushui Pandaren, viewing them as equally irrelevant to her as the Tauren are.

History:

Born Mairon Aulende, second daughter of three to Melchior and Ullian Aulende, Mablin's early life was one of wealth and welfare. Adept in the arts of the Arcane since a young age, Mairon was raised with this in mind. Like many young Elven women she was beautiful, and equally vain of her appearance, spending her wealth and her talents to enhance her own appearance more often than not.

Mairon joined the Kirin Tor shortly before her 74th birthday, and would become a respected member of Dalaran's higher echelons later in her life. She eventually caught the attention of a High Elven Archmage, Curumo Whitecloak, and later also gained his affections. Mairon would go on to marry him although some considered her motivations for returning the older Elf's affections suspect, as it significantly contributed to her rising status within the mage-city, and she was quite rarely actually seen with her husband.

Suspicions like these were reinforced many years later when Curumo was killed under mysterious circumstances within his quarters, apparently by a miscast Arcane spell. Many claimed an Archmage of Whitecloak's experience wouldn't fail with what was to all appearances a simple spell, within the magic-school he was most well-versed in no less, and that this would be sufficient evidence of foul play. In spite of this, Mairon would inherit the possessions of the elder Archmage, including his extensive library of Arcane lore and his significant wealth of gold, and the case of Curumo's 'mysterious' death was soon closed as just an accident.

As she grew older, Mairon grew to fear that her youthful looks were fading with age. Her Arcane use became less of a tool to refine her already elegant features, and more of a permanent mask of youthful beauty. Indeed, it eluded Mairon that her abuse of the Arcane had actually withered away her body worse than aging would, and she was quickly becoming tired and weak, only sustaining herself through even more use of magic, caught in a vicious cycle.

When Kel'thuzad began to seek out the corrupt and weak-willed within the Kirin Tor to side with him in the Cult of the Damned as its foremost Necromancers, he approached Mairon early on, knowing full well the extent of her depravity. Mairon grew to be a prominent member of the Cult of the Damned, using her skills and connections to secretly dig out those who would willingly turn to the Cult. When the Third War came, she used her knowledge of Quel'thalas' defenses to aid the Scourge invasion and the destruction of Silvermoon.

Mairon sought true immortality rather than the longevity promised by the Sunwell or the halted aging her ancestors enjoyed. She was eventually rewarded with just that, volunteering to becoming one of the first wave of new Death Knights raised and trained in Acherus, rechristened with a new, dark name as Mablin Gorthaur, the Hand of Dread. When Darion Mograine turned on the Lich King and freed the majority of the Acherus Death Knights from his grip to form the Ebon Blade, Mablin was among those freed, and forced to confront her actions as a member of the Scourge.

Filled with despair at the suffering she had caused and the lives she had extinguished, she joined the Horde to protect her homeland of Quel'thalas and seek redemption for her crimes against her people.

Things you may know about this character:

  • Mablin resides in a former Scourge stronghold, conquered and renamed Dol-Sauroth, the Summit of the Abhorrent, in the mountains separating Quel'thalas from the Plaguelands. Because of this she is sometimes known as the Necromancer of Dol-Sauroth.
  • She was once an Archmage and a tutor in Dalaran under the name of Mairon Aulende, and disappeared during the Third War shortly before the Scourge marched on Dalaran.
  • As Mairon she fought during the Second War on the side of the Alliance, and still holds Trolls, Orcs and the rest of the Horde in worse regard than the Alliance despite changing sides.
  • Mablin took a vow after being liberated from the Scourge to never again kill another Elf, wether High Elf, Blood Elf or Night Elf, except for acts of self-defense.

Things you may not know about this character:

  • Her part in the sacking of Quel'thalas is only known to other members of the Cult of the Damned or the Scourge, freed or otherwise.
  • The dark tower Dol-Sauroth was once merely a Scourge strongpoint in the mountains to secure the rear of the invasion of Quel'thalas, but has been reshaped by its new mistress into a terrible underground necropolis.
