PS: It doesn't surprise me you "haven't heard about them", because back then, we didn't rely on multi-million-numbers to decide what game we play, but friends' recommendations mostly. Believe it or not, I've been playing pc games since 1987 and I've never once touched Super Mario or Pokemon or w/e, in my "career". Ever.
Re: The "other game thread"
Maybe you just hate nintendo.

Favorite game of all times. Seriously. Along with Contra, and that was when having a Gameboy was considered hi-tech.

Nintendo didn't exist as a major trend, either, when I was playing. "Portable" would probably mean a portable reclining chair. "Console" meant perhaps a Spectrum ZX Sinclair, using your tape recorder as data storage. That was my first "console". And right after that, I was playing on a Hyundai Super-16TE, with a Hercules gfx adaptor, two 5 1/4" floppies, no HDD, no mouse, no joystick (at first) and the pc speaker as "sound". Monochrome, in case you wondered. Go figure.

Mate of mine has that pile of junk still. Played around a million variants of Alien Invader on it. Shit was so cash.

Re: The "other game thread"
Also, games were assholes back then.
Remember when -any- kind of save function was luxury? And the far bigger norm was death = start over?
In nice game death = start over that level.
I miss that... a bit... kind off.

Re: The "other game thread"
I never understood the hype about pandaren. So yeah. Not exactly giving me any shivers. Few facepalms, as panda-related-stuff always did (why not World of Madagascar while we're at it). And definitely not tempting to reactivate accounts. Nothing really -wrong- with it, just a complete lack of something extraordinary. *shrug*
Re: The "other game thread"
World of Kung-Fu Panda, more like. Having Jack Black voice their faction leader would be a selling point for me tho, just saying. Anyhoo, let's shovel Mop (heh, equals joke in dutch) discussion over to here and keep this thread for the real games, shall we. ;p
Moar Arkham City hype!
Viral marketing. So good.

Re: The "other game thread"
I still have all my old consoles. And I'm not that old, so they only go back to the Atari. XD Which was my grandfathers. He still has his old Game&Watch stuff, etc. And this ancient pc thing. XD
The first game I actually owned, which I bought myself was the Lion King. I demanded it. And my mother finally gave in and let me spend what few pennies I had on it! XD A great victory.
Apart from that, my gran and grandad raised me on games. Terranigma was a favourite. I actually snapped it up at a bootsale a while back for like, 50p. And I still play them all to this day.

Re: The "other game thread"
Nayan, you so old your first console was an abacus.
I remember my first games. On the BBC Electron oh yeah. On tape. Sweet. Then we had an Amiga, it at least has discs and some of my favourite games ever.
Never owned a console until the Playstation. Before it was the PS1.

Re: The "other game thread"
My first game... Pong. On a "sharp", that used an analogue cable to which you had to tune your TV, en which then needed 10-15 minutes to load from a tape. I think I once programmed that machine.. but I can't recall what I managed to make it do. Back then, a "blue screen" was just your Q-Basic editor.
Then came the 286 with a 40 MB hard disk!!
Then the 386... the pentium 75Mhz and so on. My games evolved as I kept looking for new kinds of genres and gameplay:
Wolfenstein 3D, Doom, Doom 2, Duke Nukum 3D, Quake, Quake 2, Quake 3.
(Sarcasm intended)
Well.. actually I always liked RPGs but found them too boring till my raging teenage hormones died down.

Re: The "other game thread"
Well.. I'm not sure. I just notice I can actually enjoy sitting still in a game for more than 3 seconds and chat.
Re: The "other game thread"
I had this with Homeworld and it was even a single player, space RTS one. The music and ambience was so damn awesome, I often caught myself just standing still.Jeanpierre wrote:Well.. I'm not sure. I just notice I can actually enjoy sitting still in a game for more than 3 seconds and chat.
First game? Space invaders....1987, on a friend's 286 xD

Is it just me or did Grand Theft Auto: Vice City have the greatest soundtrack, OF ALL TIME?

Been thinking about playing it through again for just that reason. I doubt I will though since I'd probably just get bored after 10 minutes.
