Re: The "other game thread"
I loved Guild Wars, I'll but 2 no matter what, simply because it's free. But unless GvGs are still a big thing, rolling a character at max level straight away is still an option, and an RP community, or at the very least a community of players who wouldn't make the villains gallery at Nuremberg look like well adjusted members of society, finally develops, I doubt I'll stay long.
It's a shame because GW was an incredible game, until the expansions (Yes they were nessecary to pay for the servers, but frankly I'd rather have paid £2 a month subscription than be landed with them) caused the developers to lose sight of the goal.
But, frankly, those attack animations/skills look bloody awful...I guess it's too late to say they won't go live? :S

In all honesty those reviewers are probably the sort who think Lord of the Rings is allegory for Europe at varius points in the 20th centuary. Besides Antiva/Orlais bearing clear resemblance to certain charicaturs of European states I cannot see it.
This may not sound like praise to people who don't appreciate this sort of thing but I'd have bought the game even if there was no combat, just to experiance the cutscenes, conversations, and story.
Some of the characters are weak, but I think people are overly harsh, desperate to find the smallest crack in a game that's prequal was almost universally praised. I myself thought the companions let the game down, compared to the companions in Origins, but some of them are fantastic. I think I'd be less annoyed by the choice of companions if all the irritating ones weren't the ones I'd advise taking for game mechanics reasons.
Oh, I had a lenghty discussion with Daivd Gaider on the Bioware boards about the setting, and he flat out admitted that Ferelden was Scotland, Orlais France and Antiva the italian city states (or, "inspired by"). That's a huge turnoff for me, yet I trudged through DA:O a few times.
Of the DA2 plot, I've read that there isn't a motivating over-arching drama or noticable narrative later in the game, or, if it's there it gets drowned in a flood of sidequests.
I heard something about recycled dungeons as well? That's just poop
I couldln't care one whit about where they got their inspiration for the world. That they have RL inspiration make's things seem more real since they have more easily taken and just shifted facts a bit, instead of having had to come up with a lot all by itself.
No story spoilers, just general plot telling.
- Spoiler:
- For the DA2 plot, while still not finished, there might not be any big "motivating over-arching drama" aside from your characters survival, but I think the plot in DA2 is personally better than DAO. A lot better, since it's not the classical "Oh shit, save the world time." It's rather a boiling plot of intrigues and many side quests link to the main plot.
The problem with the plot might be that it is too smart and at times political for many gamers to appreciate it.

Following up on that spoiler box, don't read it if you dont want the finale ending spoilers:
- Spoiler:
- It ultimately leads up to how the war on thedas started between the circles of magi around Thedas and the Templars. The fact that you as the champion of kirkwall were at the heart of it all when it began. The fact that you had a hand in how it all began and when it began you suddenly disapear into the mountains... Aswell as the hero of ferelden (depending on backstory save). The things you do ingame through the main plot and side quests play a part in the build up which doesn't become entirly clear until near the end but it's actually good that way as it comes together nicely. Intended that they kept the suspense that long. AKA too "smart" as stated.

EDIT:
omgomgomgomg
DA2 story thoughts, spoilers;
omgomgomgomg
DA2 story thoughts, spoilers;
- Spoiler:
- I finished it last night, and I was left with mixed feelings. I won't go into the technical details, the repetitive caves/cellars (ME1 Storage Buildings/Underground Bunkers all over) or the companions, but simply the overarching plot.
And well, simply put, the final act blowed.
Act one was alright, and it made sense in a way that you were making a name for yourself and gathering money to head into the Deeproads, generally setting the stage. They could've done without cutting year one (hello obvious future dlc content) but hey. Most important thing it did though was introducing us to the Chantry/Qunari story, which was the focus of the following Chapter.
And to say the least, of all the acts, this was seriously the best one. The scheming, the backstabbing, seeing how the Arishok steadly grows more and more infuriated with humanity and finally the invasion that makes you the champion (also meeting Grey Warden Alistair \o/). Up till the hightown area and the keep, I was actually convinced that it would be the final chapter, or that the next would deal with trying to appease the Arishok's superiors to prevent the Qunari from finally unleashing that invasion force they've been building since, or even prior to, DA:O - ending with the Qunari declaring war, naturally.
Instead we got.. act three.
We're introduced to one Commander Meridith, whom we've only heard some rumors of that she's going crazy (gosh I wonder WHY), and some elf who turns out to be the High Magus of the Kirkwall Circle. Both are apparently very pissy at one another. "Okay, well, I suppose they'll up the mage/templar conflict a little", I think, and hope the cullumination will finally shut Anders up. What follows is most of the act chasing mages, killing them and/or templars and wondering when we get back to what I assumed was the main plot. Then finally I find myself siding with the mages, strangely fighting more abominations/shades than templars, and seeing the whackjob of a high magus turn into a copy of the Golems of Amgarrak endboss (and far easier at that) because he pissed his pants.
Then we fight Meridith.
It.. just.. Crazy. <.> Don't get me wrong, it was far more interesting a fight than the Arch Demon in DA:O and actually quite fun, but from a story perspective...
Just...
Wat?
I get that this primeval Lyrium is big, and I mean really big. But act three really dropped the ball for me on what was shaping up as something epic. What of the Qunari, what if a delegation had been in the Chantry when Anders blew it up*, ready to settle the problems that had started with the tome of Kosloun. Just think of the 'political mealstorm' this would've caused, not just between the Circle and the Templars.
All in all though, with Leliana showing up (even if she died) and the revelation that the Champion vanished just like the Warden (even if he/she died, lulz), DA2 is a good addition to the Dragon Age story. Not amazing, but a good one.
Now its waiting for DA3, probably set in Orlais (we go where Sandahl goes, after all). Do hope it'll have more Flemeth that the Cameo role she had now.
* Anders Blowing up the Chantry. Pretty much the only story highlight of Act three bar helping Merril Butcher her own clan.

For those who weren't entirly pleased for the story DA2 took. What were you expecting instead? Just a sincere question as folks seem to have this other idea of what they wanted out of it.

Hours in. but still in what feels to be the early stages of the game. Sure is a lot of running involved. Avoiding spoilers atm though, but roughly how long did it take for you to complete?

20-36 hours should give just enough time before the new assassin's creed hits the pc Although I'd really like to see DA2 from the opposite pov, wonder exactly how different it'll be.

Re: The "other game thread"
The biggest bummer for me is the companion system that's.. gone. You can't talk to companions anymore anywhere you want. I miss the camp where you ended up in DA:O after every mission and where you could explore your companions and chat with them. Now it seems there's set quests when you can talk to them and outside of that.. nothing seemingly. It seems they really pushed this down a lot.Eira wrote:For those who weren't entirly pleased for the story DA2 took. What were you expecting instead? I'm really enjoying the story so far. I like building up a name in a city and Kirkwall is a very interesting city. It has a feeling that I never had with Denerim for example! I'm only just at act two so we'll see how it goes.
In general I was expecting a bit more from the companion system and had hoped we'd be exploring more areas than just Kirkwall.

Although the companions seem to have decent story lines at least, I wonder how different those can turn out given different choices, here's to hoping. And Kirkwall, nghh, wouldn't mind a bit of new scenery, then again, still thinking there is a lot ahead for me still.

While the voicework and storytelling looks promising, tOR's certainly not going to be revolutionary on the instancing part.
Also, lol, AC:Bro having issues being distributed via digital channels

The people being surprised by that obviously didn't buy AC2 digitally when it got out, like some losers out there :S
... I got it working a year later though.

Nothing in the video really excited/interested me until the closing theme played. That made me very happy, but I'm still not interested.

Still liking DA2, but it's starting to lose my attention and starts to drag. Not sure if i want to do any more random side quests which just throw wave after wave of random mobs at you, appearing out of nowhere.

Still enjoying it...I thought you knew this was about deciding who this champion were and what he did (opinions Included), not saving A world from A legion Of Arch demons.

Not everyone knows that entirly no! People suspect its a save the world scenario in general... Oh how they are wrong but I aint complaining either way. Story was good enough.

Re: The "other game thread"
I liked it a lot. Showed the lengths it took to attain the power the champion had and then the pressure that was put on them to choose a side. I found myself agreeing with both sides on different points and despising the fanatics on both sides.
I didn't think the storytelling was quite as good as in DA: Origings, Bann Tegans first conversation with Anora sent shivers down my spine. That said there were still a few 'very' touching moments.
The fights did begin to drag by the time I got to the final act. I loved that individual opponants were trivial and i thought waves of enemies during some fights was an excellent idea, especially during boss fights, but by the fourth act I was fed up of bumping into a scummy bunch of criminals, butchering them all with a single volley of spells from my three mages then rolling my eyes as a wave of ninja appeared from the rooftops/sewers/thin air etc.
I've yet to play it through a second time, I'm creating a new Origins save to import first, but I'm really looking forward to seeing what changes can be made with different decisions.
